Southshore’s Connecticut Rail Business Hits Milestone
December 11, 2006
Southshore’s warehousing logistics operations in East Hartford, Connecticut recently hit a milestone with the receipt of the 100th railcar in the 2006 shipping season. Southshore’s primary rail customers served in its East Hartford distribution center are West Coast based tomato products processors seeking low cost transportation integration in their supply chain. The 100th railcar contained tomato products from the Modesto, California area. This railcar pushed the total inbound tonnage to more than 9,000 tons of food product delivered to Southshore’s Connecticut facility this year. Approximately 75% of these food products are cross-docked in Southshore’s distribution center for final delivery to food processing and end user facilities.
Southshore’s East Hartford facility is direct rail served by the Connecticut Southern Railroad with interchange to both the CSX and Union Pacific railroads. The Southshore private siding is capable of handling up to ten high-cube railcars concurrently. The trucking industry has experienced comparatively high diesel fuel cost in 2006, and this has contributed to the increase in rail traffic as shippers and their collaborative logistics partners look for less expensive ways of moving freight.
